Unplugging for the Holidays

Every year during the holidays, we’re given the most magical gift of all: the D+ offices close between Christmas and New Year’s. I know, I know, Santa Delucchi is good to us. Of course, we prep and announce and prep some more, and our social media team keeps trucking, but we’re out of the office and enjoying quality time with friends and family. As our company grows, this is a luxury that may not always be available to us, but for now, it’s the best 21st century gift a girl could ask for. No email, no phone, no calendar invites. We just unplug, and enjoy this little pocket of time off. We come back in the New Year well rested, newly inspired and ready to go. No matter how hard you work, everyone needs a digital detox to clear your head, gain perspective, keep those creative juices flowing, and avoid burning out.

If you don’t have a Santa Delucchi, then I say unto you: Put the phone down, that Instagram of your Christmas ham can wait! That, and a few other simple wellness tips to keep you sane and productive this holiday season.

1. Step away from the email.

Yes, it’s important as people in the service industry we are available and accessible during office hours — but everyone deserves a break, and likely, that email can wait an hour.

So log out, grab a good book, head to a coffee shop and order yourself a Peppermint Pumpkin Mocha Spice Marshmallow Latte, or something. Take a real lunch break – a full hour – without checking email. Even the most successful worker bees do it.

2. Put the iPhone away.

My name is Molly and my iPhone is permanently attached to my right hand. Hey, the first step is admitting you have a problem! Did you know the mere presence of a smartphone while spending quality time with people has a negative effect on their experience with you? It does.

Whether at a friend’s holiday party or grandma’s house to bring gifts, put your phone somewhere that isn’t easily accessible. Like in your coat pocket, then hang it up in the closet – and leave it there. It’s going to feel strange for the first hour, you may start grabbing the remote and trying to unlock the screen. Stick with it, and in no time you’ll be deep in great conversations.

3. Meditate at your desk.

Calm.com is a great way to mentally step away from whatever stressful situation you find yourself in, and you don’t even have to get up. Log out of your Outlook, put your ear pods in, gaze at the screen of calming landscapes, set a timer and breathe. Your co-workers may not even notice!

The benefits of meditation are numerous, but most importantly for desk meditation, you will gain a new perspective on stressful situations. And we know the holidays can be stressful.

Outside of the office, you can try things like putting your phone away when you get home, read a book instead of mindlessly watching TV, or signing up for yoga or a fitness class. If all else fails, there is little that a home-cooked meal and glass of wine shared with a friend or significant other won’t cure — your coworkers (and clients!) will thank you for it.
