Well Played, Ellen!

Twitter Oscars 2014 Ellen

I hate to admit it but I watched the Oscars, or at least most of it, last night. My parents were in town and they wanted to check out Ellen DeGeneres as host, so we flipped it on. I have not seen most of the movies in the major categories, except for animated feature – yes, I have three kids ages six and under, so I assumed it would be rather boring.

However, Ellen is the real deal. She was a fantastic host. Loved her whole bit with the pizza and I was totally sucked in with her effort to break President Obama’s retweet record on Twitter. Not only did she casually stroll down the aisle and proclaim her selfie with Merly Streep would break the record but it happened within an hour of her proclamation. That’s star power. And it certainly didn’t hurt that not only Meryl Streep but a whole group of A-listers jumped in.

D.C. might think it’s Hollywood sometimes, but Hollywood is Hollywood, all the time.

Her tweet now has more than 2,500,000 retweets to Obama’s 780,000. (The President’s was a photo hugging First Lady Michelle Obama.) When DeGeneres posted the photo from her Twitter account, @TheEllenShow, just after 10 p.m., she captioned it: “If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever.” She set the record less than an hour later. Twitter also sent out an apology because all of the retweeting disrupted service for more than 20 minutes after 10 p.m.

I couldn’t resist getting into the game too. Now, I didn’t get even into the same world as DeGeneres – nor did I actually take that pic – but it was rather fun to see how many people did retweet. And, it does make you wonder, how many retweets does it take for every single twitter feed to include that pic?

Happy tweeting @TheEllenShow and know you have a new fan in DC.
