Caitlyn Jenner Sets Another World Record

Caitlyn Jenner revealed her new transformed self on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine this past Monday, and in doing so, added another world record to her name. A couple of months ago, Kim Kardashian’s controversial magazine cover popularized the phrase “break the internet,” and this week another from the Kardashian-Jenner clan has potentially “broken” the internet. After the Vanity Fair cover was revealed, Caitlyn Jenner created a new twitter handle (@Caitlyn_Jenner) where she gained 1 million followers in just four short hours. She set a new  world record, that was once held by President Obama, as the fastest person to gain 1 million twitter followers. Here are some additional highlights that display the monumental impact of this story:

  • 1.5 million tweets
  • 241,037 retweets on the magazine cover that was posted on Caitlyn’s twitter account
  • Gained 1.4 million instagram followers in 3 days
  • According to Mashable, the Vanity Fair cover has reached more than 46 million people across its website, Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter accounts
  • According to Chartbeat, people spent 470,000 hours engaged with the Jenner story which accounted for 7% of all online attention on Monday. To put this in perspective, Kim Kardashian’s pregnancy announcement only accounted for 152,000 hours of attention

Social media is a powerful beast. It allows society to share, inform, educate, network, and connect with others. Although this story has received an enormous amount of buzz because of the celebrity factor, it shows the impact social media has on individuals, brands, and even the world.
