The Commercial Bowl: Best Ads of Super Bowl 2014

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 11.17.51 AM

Media sources estimate that 108.4 million people watched the Super Bowl last night. The game may not have been that entertaining, but there were some great ad spots to keep things exciting in between plays. Here are my picks for winners in a few major commercial categories:

CAR: Honda’s “Hug Fest”

Honda’s hug fest commercial was by far my favorite of all of the car ads. Starring Bruce Willis and Fred Armisen, it’s  a great public service announcement about car safety — which just happens to be one of Honda’s main messages — to which audiences could emotionally connect while also laughing a little, too. #hugfest

BEER: Budweiser’s “Puppy Love”

Budweiser pulled out their iconic Clydesdales — and some seriously adorable puppies — for one heart-wrenching commercial. Budweiser’s brand is all about proud, hardworking Americans and connecting to them through humor or in this case, puppies. The brand used a similar approach in an earlier commercial depicting an actual soldier coming home to a parade that Budweiser threw for him. #bestbuds

YOGURT: Dannon’s “The Spill”

How could you not love a “Full House” reunion?! Of course, this Oikos commercial also employs the ancient art of the sexualized double entendre — not something you regularly see associated with yogurt.

CEREAL: Cheerios’ “Gracie”

My absolute favorite was the Cheerios commercial. Depicting a conversation that many families face (in which Cheerios play a subtle role)  this commercial is relatable and reaches out to the cereal’s target demographic: families. It’s a heartwarming and funny glimpse of a  milestone in one family’s life.
