Day One of Social Media Week: Fashion & Instagram

The instagram app open on an iPhone, showing photos tagged with the fashion hashtag.

Monday Night: Quantifying Fashion’s Love Affair With Instagram: What to Post and How to Calculate ROI

Monday night Isel and I ventured out to SoHo for a panel that hit a sweet spot between fashion, Instagram and ROI. Why do fashion brands like Instagram so much? Who’s doing it justice? What are the golden rules for brands (fashion or otherwise) for using Instagram. Some of the best bits of insight came from Tony King, CEO of King and Partners:

The two golden rules of Instagram: 1. Is it interesting? 2. Does it look good?

While it was definitely an Instagram focused panel, I think these rules apply for the growing trend in social media today as it gets increasingly visual on all platforms, from Facebook to Snapchat.

Instagram is KING – generating a 4.21% engagement rate, more than Facebook’s .07% and Twitter’s .03%

Your social media manager is NOT your creative director.

Think of Instagram like window-shopping. Consumers follow you because they like your story.

I question this last quote. If I’m at a panel to figure out what the ROI is for an Instagram presence, this notion of “window shopping” is a cop out. I can’t see how many people viewed my Instagrams vs. who liked my Instagrams. What can do that? The big boys like Facebook and Twitter, for sure, but also the new contender: Snapchat shows you how many people actively viewed your stories within the app, and that’s where a lot of people are finding it valuable.

Stay tuned for more insights in tomorrow’s post, and head here to learn how to follow Isel and I in real time!
