HBO Capitalizes On “Game of Thrones” Fandom With Dothraki Language Course

6.16 GoT

While I haven’t yet found the time to get into it, according to a majority of my friends, “Games of Thrones” is the show to watch and become addicted to.

I have seen a lot of shows have an incredible following and relationship with its fans. For example, I have an unhealthy obsession with NBC’s “The Office” and might own almost every item from the online store. However, after reading a recent article on Media Bistro, I believe HBO has mastered the art of marketing to its loyal and growing “Game of Thrones” fan base.

Set to release in October, fans can now preorder “Language Dothraki: A Conversational Language Course Based on the Hit Original HBO Series “Game of Thrones'” from the HBO website. David J. Peterson, linguist and creator of the Dothraki language, worked with HBO Global Licensing and Living Language to make a 120-page course book for fans that includes a step-by-step guide to pronunciation, easy-to-follow grammar examples and explanations, an extensive thematic vocabulary lists, dialogue, basic phrases and exercises for reinforcement. The guide will be available as a printed book, an online course and a mobile app for iOS devices.

HBO has executed yet another great marketing tactic for “Game of Thrones.” It will not only help to grow the fan base and the show’s viewership, but it is great marketing for the HBO network itself! It provides longtime fans with an official guide to learn Dothraki and provides newcomers with a resource to catch them up to speed! Soon there won’t be a need for subtitles to understand what is being spoken on screen.

Although I am new to the series, I am drawn to the franchise more because of how HBO interacts and caters to its loyal fan base. The new language course in Dothraki allows for fans to immerse even further in the world of Westeros from their living room in a more interactive way. Everyone will now be able to speak like Khal Drogo!
