Broncos vs. Seahawks: The Social Bowl

Some people watch for the halftime show, others are in it for the commercials, and it seems like there are even a few people left who care about the actual game: the Super Bowl is just days away. By now you may have seen countless tweets in support of or against Richard Sherman dissing Crabtree or enjoyed the latest and always funny installment of Bad Lip Reading’s NFL Edition in which Peyton Manning discusses things that gross him out. As Sam wrote, the NFL content machine is alive and well.

Social media has allowed for unrivaled access to updates on your favorite teams and your favorite players, and the Seahawks and Broncos are no exception. I’m not not a huge follower of the NFL. I watch socially, so frankly I have no idea who will win on Sunday, so I’m putting it in context of something I do know about: social media. Using a super scientific approach (I call it “addition”), I looked at the fan bases for Denver and Seattle and came up with a winner…

The Broncos had an early lead with their 2.2 million Facebook Fans, but the Seahawks systematically chipped away with their stronger audiences on Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube late in the game. Pinterest was a particular surprise to me…I had written it off as a “wedding/decorating idea” platform, but the Seahawks are finding a way to make it relevant to a pinning audience with 140,000 more followers than the Broncos can claim. In the end, the Broncos kept the lead and win this year’s Social Bowl. Winning should probably come with the “Zuckerberg Trophy” in the shape of a polished thumbs up.

We’ll see who actually wins on Sunday. Chances are, it could be a brand. I’m willing to bet a fair amount of people in the advertising/social media world couldn’t tell you which team won last year, but they could probably tell you how Oreo nailed it with just one tweet. Enjoy the show!
