Four Rules to Follow for Fabulous Events

Brittanie_Verde

If you’ve ever coordinated a “simple” birthday party for your kid, best friend, and/or significant other (read: these are never simple) or perhaps ventured into darker territory with a 200-person seated dinner with a five-course menu (it’s wedding season ya’ll!), you know event planning is not for the faint of heart.

Love’em or hate’em, events are not only a piece of the “big brand pie” but a tangible and integral part of the storytelling process for companies, organizations and even those couples saying “I do.”

After producing the recent groundbreaking ceremony for Verde Pointe, a new, mixed-use development, in Arlington, VA, I emerged enlightened….

Four Rules to Follow for Fabulous Events

1. “Have an opinion.” -Whitney, Director of all things digitally awesome at Delucchi

Clients look to you as the expert, act like one.

Can’t decide between the green or white linens? Go with green and go with confidence. (Also, white shows everything, so there’s that).

2.  Show, don’t just tell.

The beauty of events is the built-in, captive audience for storytelling. Take this opportunity to not only tell your story, but showcase it through elements of the event.

Example: Is your project or company focused on going green? Use recyclable or reusable china instead of regular.

While the devil is in the details, they sure leave you some room to shine.

3. Creative > Perfect

Attendees look past imperfect conditions (say, a mud-covered event site) when there’s a twist on the traditional.

4. Be flexible.

The only certainty in life event planning is change. Work with what you got. Fake it till you make it. And if all else fails, smile because “smiling’s my favorite.” -Elf
