3 Ways To Live-Tweet A Conference Without Sucking

Live-tweeting has become de rigeur at conferences in all manner of industries, but most especially those involving digital marketing and/or social media.  The problem is, it so often becomes a trap in which event attendees become sucked into a vacuum of self-congratulatory nonsense, or worse, 500 people tweet the same sound bite with the event hashtag. Newsflash: Neither of these offers any actual insight!

People’s absurd and pointless live tweets have become a source of parody on the internet. For example, one Tumblr account collected some of the most BS-laden tweets from Social Media Week London at the end of last year, adding hilarious commentary reflecting what everyone reading the tweets was no doubt thinking (once they stopped being impressed with themselves for following a live-tweet stream).

Want to avoid making everyone in the Twitterverse roll their eyes at your next event? Fear not! There are fairly easy ways to ensure that you live-tweet engaging, interesting, actually insightful information. Our own Senior Search Marketing Specialist Jonathan recently went to the Google All Stars conference in San Francisco, and since the whole team couldn’t join him and his partner in crime, he faithfully promised to live-tweet the entire thing. What could have been a slew of regurgitated sound bites and tired tips ended up keeping the whole office ringing with peals of laughter for the entire four days. How did he do it?

1)     He relayed interesting information and related it back to how we’ve been doing things at Delucchi Plus.

3

2)     He added his OWN opinion to tweets, instead of merely regurgitating information from the panels, and was honest about whether “insights” given were, in fact, valuable or not.

4

3)     He injected what could be a dry subject with tongue-in-cheek humor, gently poking fun at Google and ourselves.

Needless to say, the office (and some friends-of-friends even) were gripped. True story: My roommate followed the stream and told me she “learned a lot about Google Adwords and what you guys do at work.” I’d call that an unequivocal live-tweeting success! #DelucchiDoesGoogle
