You Run Better Better Than the Metro

You Can run better than @WMATA

A few of us Delucchi rock stars participated in the Rock & Roll USA Half-Marathon this past weekend, and the one thing on which we can all agree was that the spectator signage was fantastic! If you are a runner, you know some of the common casualties that come around mile nine or 10 (i.e. the tinkle train, chafing, lost toenails and countless other things that are better left unnamed), so you will understand what made these signs so great. The D.C. spectators tapped into some of these “issues” and created signs that spoke to their target audience – runners. Three of the better ones:

  • “Hurry up, we’re late for brunch!”
  • “Run now, beer later.”
  • “Smile if you pee’d a little.”

But by far the best was the sign that directly called out a local brand about which we ALL have personal feelings, good and bad: D.C. Metro. So how do you guarantee your brand fairs well in the signage brigade? Below are some suggestions:

  • Go big and go bold
  • Speak to your audience
  • Own your brand truth

These suggestions all roll up to one thing, your #1 focus when creating signage is capturing the attention of your audience. Once you’ve hooked them with your sign, they are bound to come back for more. So, the next time you’re tasked with creating a sign – don’t forget your ultimate goal, and OWN IT!
