The Uber Eclipse

As us Washingtonians know, the 2014 elections are over at last. We can bid adieu to the incessant back-to-back commercials slamming each other’s opponents and finally be at peace while watching our favorite shows. We can also be at peace knowing that one of our (my) favorite companies – Uber – experienced a massive surge during this past election thanks to the congressional campaign committee members and many politicians.

FEC spending data provided by the congressional campaign committees shows that Uber usage has rapidly outgrown all other types of transportation used – taxis, limos and rental cars – by 60% in this last election cycle alone. In 2012 there were less than 100 Uber rides taken by campaign committees, compared with the 2,800 taken this past cycle.

Uber has made getting from point A to point B so quick and seamless, that the simple act of standing on a street corner and hailing a cab now seems increasingly unnatural. We can blame it on the fact that D.C. taxis didn’t take credit cards for years, or we can acknowledge the fact that Uber took advantage of the digital space and continues to evolve and re-market to an ever-expanding target audience.

No matter what political party you support, we can all agree that Uber wins our seat in the election for preferred method of transportation
