April Fools’ Day always inspires some great creative marketing moments — here’s a look at five of my favorites this year.
Mini Cooper T
The idea: The world’s first vehicle to be powered by a tea-leaf biofuel composite covering up to 40 miles on a single cup. Steep-able colorways include “Chamomile Yellow,” “Red Bush” and “Earl Grey.”
Chupa Chups
The idea: A guerrilla marketing release of extremely limited edition 50-carat precious stone lollipops made of emerald, ruby, sapphire, diamond and giant black pearl. These lollipops were distributed Willy-Wonka-style through out the world, and this “breaking news” story from Argentina reveals the first winner.
MyEyeDr
We had a little fun ourselves this year with the release of a new fashion line of eye patches from our client, MyEyeDr. Jill Sparrow for the gals, Jack Tar for the guys. All very pirate-chic. Folks who clicked our link were treated to a special coupon.
Vosges Chocolate
Luxury chocolate company @Vosges is known for exotic flavor mixes, but none is more popular or controversial than Bacon + Chocolate. (The dark chocolate version is amazing!). Those who clicked to buy up the last remaining inventory were instead informed of a line extension for the bacon bars, which now include Cinnamon+Sugar+Bacon.
Google Maps Monster Hunt
Google and Nintendo released a video introducing a new monster hunting challenge. Contestants who poke all Pokémon by April 2 got a chance to visit Google Headquarters to compete for a new position as Pokémon Master. From the Google blog: “We value employees who are risk-taking and detail-oriented, have deep technical knowledge, and can navigate through tall grass to capture wild creatures. It turns out that these skills have a lot in common with another profession—that of the Pokémon Master.”
